Today's post is about the life history of Kavignar Kannadasan in Tamil by Tamilan who was his adopted son. This biography will be helpful to the Tamil people who are interested to know more about this eminent writer, theologian and politician. He was born on November 11th, 1891 in a small village called Karamadai near Theni in North Arcot District of Tamil Nadu. He died on January 5th, 1964 at India Medical College Hospital in New Delhi. After completing his primary education at India Government School he joined Madurai Kamaraj University to study English Literature which became his major subject till 1919. Then he went to England and continued his studies at King's college, London and got the degree of master of literature. His first book "Kanda Puranam" was published in 1919 while he was studying in London. He joined as lecturer at Maharaja College which is now renamed as Kannaday University. After that he joined Associate Press of India and worked there briefly. In 1921, Kannadasan married Lakshmi Narayani who was also a poet and writer in Tamil. They had three children; two sons (Mahadevan and Nagarajan) and a daughter (Saroja). However, Mahadevan died at early age of three years due to illness. Nagarayanan was the co-author of several books. He died at age 41 in 1972. Kannadasan had his first meeting with Ayya Vaikundar at the age of 16. Although he did not accept Vaikundar's teachings initially, he gradually became a follower of Ayya Vaikundar. Later, he met Bhakthi Kural who helped him to study Vedanta for six months in 1927. After that, he spent three years in writing his first book "Kanda Puranam". After completing his studies in England, he started work on his second book "Thirukural". It was published in 1936 and it became a huge success. In 1938, Kavignar wrote about six religious books including "Sethu Kavacham" and "Avatharam". In 1944, he started a magazine called "Kalyana Mandapam" which was the first magazine ever in Tamil. He played a vital role in implementing a resolution at the Madras Legislative Assembly in 1949 by achieving the statehood of Tamil Nadu from Madras Presidency. He also played a vital role in convincing India Government to have a separate department for Tamil Language and Literature which was established on February 22nd, 1956. He established a political party called Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and was elected as its founder president. In 1957, he became a member of Rajya Sabha and served as a member till his death in 1964. After his death, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam was re-organized into All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam by MGR.
